The purpose of this LibGuide is to help you discover a topic that interests you and to find appropriate sources to use in your research. Our library subscribes to several databases through which you can access information about a variety of current issues with local, national, and global impacts. Ask Ms. Matlack if you need assistance at any point during your research.
*TIP: Start by looking at the Youth Activist's Toolkit in the WEB RESOURCES box below. This can be a big help when deciding which issues may be important to you.*
There are a variety of places to find information about your topic – the internet, books, pamphlets, magazines, videos, radio interviews, etc. However, not all of these sources are always considered credible or reliable. It is up to you to think critically about any source to determine if it is appropriate for your needs. You need to consider points such as:
Currency: The timeliness of the information
Relevance: The importance of the information for your needs
Authority: The source of the information
Accuracy: The reliability, truthfulness, and correctness of the content
Purpose: The reason the information exists
Use the checklist below for more detail and guidance as you find additional resources.
The library has several resources available including books, databases, and magazines to help you learn about important, current global issues–education, health, marginalized populations, violence, immigration, environment, etc. The following three databases are a good place to start. They provide topic overviews, scholarly and news articles, timelines, statistics, images, and more. You may browse by topic or search with keywords.
Ms. Matlack can assist you with finding additional credible online resources that are relevant to your chosen topic.
