Assignment

This essay builds upon the skills of comparing two different artworks according to their 2Cs and 2Fs, identifying and using reliable sources of art historical information, and crafting informed, creative interpretations of complicated ancient monuments. You may also choose to step beyond your comfort zone and select objects outside your KW set.

Step 1 (due October 23)

  • Choose two works of ancient Mediterranean art that you can write about in an extended comparison (about 4 pages). These can be from the Near East, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Cyprus, or?? as long as the objects you choose are not from the same culture.
  • Craft a meaningful, clear, and intriguing thesis sentence that establishes the essential framework of the essay to follow and includes 3 categories of analysis.
  • Identify 4 reliable sources of information on your objects, the cultures that produced them, similar objects, etc. Please do not use Khan Academy, your textbook, or any Encyclopedia as a source. Time to branch out!

Final comparison essays are due in class on Wednesday, October 28.

Web Sources

The internet can have valuable information–museum websites, online art publications, etc. However, it is important to evaluate these sources before deciding whether or not to use them. Consider:

  • Currency - How timely is the information? Are links working?
  • Authority - Who wrote/published/sponsored the information?
  • Accuracy - Is there evidence supporting the information?
  • Relevance - How does this relate to your topic? Who is the intended audience?
  • Purpose - was this published to teach, sell, entertain? Is the information objective and impartial?
