Email Scams: Warning from the Technology Dept. of PDS

As we all hunker down and get used to our new schedules, scammers are actively trying to exploit the fear and confusion surrounding the Coronavirus.  It is important that we all keep our guard up to avoid falling for scams related to current events.

In particular, be careful with emails or pop-ups asking you to install anything to help track COVID-19/Coronavirus information.  This includes browser extensions, add-ons, or other apps and programs.  As always, be wary of unsolicited attachments even from supposedly reputable sources.  Attachments continue to be a potential source for ransomware/malware/viruses and should be treated carefully before clicking or opening.

You should also be careful when asked to enter in your username/password from any link within an email.  Fake login pages have proven to be an excellent way of stealing your login information.  Best practice is to log in to any service or website directly through your browser and avoid using links embedded within emails.

In addition to Coronavirus-related scams, be on your guard for emails about other current events such as the US Census, the Tokyo Olympics, or other newsworthy items.  The same logic applies to these.  Be careful with any embedded links or attachments and avoid installing anything someone else is asking you to install.

Your PDS Tech Department is still maintaining virtual office hours during this shutdown.  If you feel that something isn't right about an email, you can always check with any member of the tech staff or send an email to Help@pds.org and someone will reply shortly.
