Research project for the course Nelson Mandela: Man and Icon

Part 1: Identify Topic

Present a research topic. The topic should center on a specific event in the anti-Apartheid movement. The event can focus on Mandela, a supporter or an opponent. You must write a one-paragraph explanation of your research. Why did you pick this specific event? What are you trying to learn about the period or larger issues of human rights / social justice?

Due 3/14 (10 points) 

Part 2: Research Round 1

  • Find 2-3 reputable tertiary sources to get the basic facts around your event.

                          o Feel free to use Library databases. 

  • Read the applicable sections of Long Walk to Freedom to find Mandela’s perspective on the event.

  • Create a brief summary of your findings. Complete with bibliography (MLA).

​                           o Part 1 must describe the event. Cite tertiary sources.
          o Part 2 must summarize Mandela’s perspective.  

                                            *You need at least 3 quotes from Mandela.

          o Bibliography and citations.

Due 3/18 (50 points) 

Part 3: Research Round 2

  • Find at least 2 competing perspectives of the event from the time. At least one of your perspectives must criticize/critique Mandela’s perspective.

  • Research the person supporting or criticizing Mandela. Provide perspective on their perspective.

Create a brief summary of your findings.
    o For each perspective, complete the following:

                    *Part 1 must describe the speaker and his/her perspective. Cite sources

                    *Part 2 must summarize the speaker’s perspective. You must include at least 3 quotes.

    o Bibliography and citations. Due 4/8 (50 points) 

Part 4: Research Round 3

       • Find two modern interpretations of the event. How has the interpretation of the event evolved over time?

      o For each modern interpretation, you must write a brief summary of the argument/perspective. You    must include at least three quotes.

      o Compare and contrast the 2 interpretations.

      o Bibliography and citations. Due 4/5 (50 points) 

Part 5: Personal Reflection

Look back to your original research question and reflect on what you learned. Did your thinking change and evolve? Why or why not? What have you learned about Mandela, social justice, etc...?
Due 4/16 (10 points) 

Part 6: Presentation

Pull together the various parts of your research and create a comprehensive presentation. Your presentation MAY NOT EXCEED 10 minutes. Be sure to present your take-away thoughts and defend them.
4/20 thru 4/22 (50 points)
