This research and writing assignment is done in conjunction with the reading of Athol Fugard's Master Harold and the Boys.

Your assignment

You will each be asked to answer a specific question about some aspect of Apartheid. Your answer needs to be about 300 words. Give information, not analysis. You must find at least three sources and create an annotated bibliography. 

Research Questions

1. Who was P.W. Botha and what was he advocating about education?

2. What were some of the accepted ways that police and the National Security Forces used to enforce the laws under Apartheid?

3. Who is Desmond Tutu and why did he establish the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)? What was its purpose?

4. What job opportunities and challenges existed for blacks under Apartheid? How have these changed in post-Apartheid South Africa?

5. Who was Nelson Mandela and what did he advocate in the years before he was sent to jail? Why was he jailed and what does this show about justice under Apartheid?

6. What was the history of the African National Congress (ANC) and its opposition to Apartheid? Why was the ANC criticized, not only by the white government, but even by some blacks?

7. What were some of the specific "pass laws" in effect under Apartheid, and how did they affect daily life for blacks in South Africa? When were they if effect, and what punishment was given for breaking the pass laws?

8. Who was Steve Biko? What was he advocating before he was jailed? What happened to Steve Biko and what does this show us about white law enforcement under Apartheid?

9. What were schools and universities like for black students and teachers under Apartheid? How were educational institutions different for white students and teachers?

10. What were conditions for black workers in the gold and diamond mines under Apartheid?

11. What was the Sharpeville massacre? Why were blacks protesting and what does that show about life under Apartheid?

12. Who was F.W. deKlerk and what changes did he bring to the South African Apartheid government? Describe the transition from Apartheid to free elections in 1994.

13. What was the Soweto uprising? Why were blacks protesting and what does that show about life under Apartheid?
