US 10th Grade Essay/The Crucible: Home

English X/American History Essay

Over the last few weeks, you have been investigating the difficult balance between social order and individual freedom in your English and History classes.  As a culminating assignment for both classes, you will write a 3-4 page paper that answers the following prompt:

How does The Crucible reflect the period in which it was written?

To fully answer this question, you must draw on the materials provided in class as well as some additional research into relevant primary and secondary sources.  Good papers will reveal a strong understanding of the materials provided in class; the strongest papers will show more individual thought and creativity.

To complete the assignment, you will have a total of 4 work days, 2 in English and 2 in History.  Please use your time wisely to conference with your teachers and get feedback on your thesis, organization, quote integration and citations.

The MINIMUM requirements for the paper are as follow:

1. Effectively integrate quotes from 2 types of sources: (1) close reading of the play; and (2) quotes that provide historical context (primary or secondary sources)

  • The strongest papers will effectively integrate more than 2 quotes, but be careful not to overdo it.  Use your teachers to get the proper balance of quotes, paraphrasing of others, and personal insights.
  • To see the difference between using a quote for historical context and close reading, please see the handouts on quote integration provided by your History and English teachers.

2. Properly cite all facts, quotes and non-original arguments;

Be sure to reference the writing guides provided in your classes and linked here.

  • You must cite at least one primary or secondary source that you found in your individual research.
  • Include a bibliography
    • Citations and Bibliography must be in MLA format
