Indigenous Peoples Guided Inquiry

How did indigenous people create a rich and varied culture?

Reflect on what you have learned in the introductory readings and videos.

  1. What are you wondering about indigenous cultures?

  2. Is there a particular tribe that has caught your interest?

Consider the materials provided by Ms. Goeke in the library.

  1. Which tribe might you like to study?

  2. How does it connect to the essential question above?

  3. Keep track of your sources for your bibliography! Take pictures with your iPad as you go!

Gather Cornell notes about the tribe you have selected.

  1. Focus on Culture Categories, which are listed below.

  2. Remember to “wonder” at the end of each page.

Draft a piece of writing, responding to the essential question for your tribe.

  1. This piece should be 4-5 paragraphs long.

  2. It needs to include an introduction and conclusion.

  3. Check the rubric for assessment competencies.

Create an Adobe Spark page about your tribe.

  1. What images will help your viewer to learn about your tribe?

  2. How might you select sections of your writing to explain your tribe?

  3. Be sure the images are high quality and not pixelated!

  4. Include a bibliography at the end of the Adobe Spark. Use the Bibliogrpahy Link on Schoology to create a bibliography. See the sample on Schoology.

Artifacts

What is an artifact?

A cultural artifact is a term used in the social sciences, particularly anthropology, ethnology and sociology for anything created by humans which gives information about the culture of its creator and users. (From Wikipedia)

As part of your project you will identify an artifact of the culture you are focusing on for the project.

Use this Smithonian's National Museum of the American Indian link to browse for artifacts. Artifacts may also be photocopied from book sources, or downloaded from esubscriptions.
