Search Tips

Keywords

  • Identify the best words to convey what you need to create your search phrase

Synonyms

  • Sometimes a topic, event, person, etc is referred to by more than one name. Ex: "Perjil Massacre" and "Parsley Massacre"

Boolean Operators

  • AND = limits results to those that include both terms
  • OR = expands results to those that include either term
  • NOT = limits results to exclude a term

Advanced Searching

  • Most databases include an advanced search. You can build a Boolean search, limit by date, publication type, etc.

Citations

Databases make citing your sources a lot easier! Most databases have a "Citation Tools" or "Cite" button that automatically generates a citation in multiple formats. If you use other sources, such as print materials or websites, you must build your citations from scratch. Online citation generators are helpful, but they are often incomplete, so it is necessary to check for completion and correctness (Purdue OWL MLA Formatting and Style Guide is a great resource for citations!).
