The Namesake, by Jhumpa Lahiri
ISBN-13: 978-0358062684
We will begin our exploration of American Literature by reading Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake (2003). The novel chronicles the Ganguli family’s journey to America from Calcutta and the experiences that shape and transform them from immigrants into Americans. Themes of the immigrant experience, clash of cultures, and the ties that bind generations take center stage in the Lahiri’s work and will provide a starting point for our year-long examination of the American Dream, family relationships, American culture, and American identity.
